Sprinkler Repair questions from Denton County homeowners
What days can I run my sprinklers in Flower Mound?
Two days a week by street address, and never from an automatic system between 10am and 6pm, all year. Cross a city line and the rule changes. Lewisville, Corinth, Highland Village and the other Upper Trinity cities also run two days, with the daytime ban in the summer months. Denton sets its own days and bans daytime watering June through September. Little Elm buys from a different district and ties your two days to trash day, dropping to one day a week in winter. Tell us which city bills your water and the controller leaves set for it.
What does a sprinkler repair cost in Flower Mound?
Most repairs land in $120 to $350, and that covers the parts the truck carries: heads, nozzles, solenoids, wire splices. A valve rebuild starts at $150. Past that, a smart controller installed is $250 to $450, a leak located and fixed under the lawn is $200 to $600, and a drip zone for the beds is $350. A mainline under the driveway sits at the high end and gets a written price before the saw comes out.
Does Flower Mound require a backflow test every year?
Flower Mound requires the test when the system goes in, on the Town's own form, uploaded to the permit. The annual test on an existing home system is a Lewisville and The Colony rule, filed through BSI Online by a tester registered with the city, and Aubrey wants an annual report at City Hall with a late fee if it is overdue. The test is $75 to $95 plus the city's filing fee where there is one. Lewisville's fee goes from $25 to $40 on November 1, 2026.
Do I need a permit for a new sprinkler system in Flower Mound?
Yes. The Town charges $350, wants plans signed and sealed by a licensed irrigator registered with Flower Mound, the rain and freeze sensor location on the drawing, and the backflow test report uploaded before the final inspection. Denton wants a backflow report as an inspection step and does not allow double check assemblies on irrigation. Aubrey charges $50 for the permit and $100 for the inspection. The permit is part of an install here, not a separate errand for you.
Is there a rebate for a smart controller in Denton County?
Depends on who sends your water bill. Denton Water Utilities pays up to $300 on a WaterSense controller and $100 on a sprinkler tune-up. Lewisville credits up to $375 a year for conservation upgrades, smart controllers and an irrigation inspection by a city-registered irrigator among them. Flower Mound and Upper Trinity do not list one. The controller has to be on the WaterSense list and the account has to be with that utility, so check before buying.
My backflow preventer split in the freeze. What now?
Close the isolation valve on the house side of the assembly so the yard stops filling, then call. The assembly gets replaced, tested and the report filed with your city on the same visit. Going forward, an insulated cover or a drain-down before the first freeze is the whole fix, and it is part of a fall tune-up at $95 to $150.
Why is one zone not coming on?
Usually a failed solenoid, a corroded splice in the valve box, or a wire cut by fence or landscape work. Around Flower Mound and Argyle, post oak and cedar elm roots also crush lateral lines and starve the far heads. The tech meters the zone at the controller and again at the valve so the fault is found, not guessed at.
Why is a zone running when the controller is off?
Grit under the valve diaphragm, or a diaphragm that has worn through, is holding the valve open. It wastes water fast and on a two-day schedule it can get you a notice. Close the valve at the backflow preventer and we will have the valve rebuilt on the next visit.
Are you licensed?
Texas law requires a TCEQ licensed irrigator or irrigation technician on site whenever an irrigation system is installed, and backflow assemblies must be tested by a TCEQ-licensed Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester who files the report with the water supplier on the state test form. The license number goes on the invoice.
Do you winterize sprinkler systems?
Full blow-out winterization is rarely necessary in North Texas, but the average first freeze arrives around November 22 and backflow preventers should be insulated or drained before it. Flower Mound and Upper Trinity suggest turning systems off around Halloween and leaving them off through February. We can do that on a fall tune-up visit.
If a zone is stuck on, close the valve at the backflow preventer first, then call (469) 949-2629. Everything else gets a date on the calendar when you call.
